OXIDATION STATES AND REDOX REACTIONS

Electrons can be moved from one element to another. Oxidation state is a useful tool for keeping track of these electron transfers. They are assigned according to some rules. Transition elements can have different oxidation states because they can transfer different number of electrons. For example, iron can be in the +2 or +3 states.
